TAG Help

TAG is All inPlay's take on the ever-popular pastime of forming anagrams. An anagram is a word made from the contents of another word or phrase. For instance, if you were given the phrase "danger doughnut," you could form words such as dough, nut, nor or gang. Note that propper nouns aren't valid anagrams. Propper nouns are things like names and places.

Playing the Game

There are two ways to play All inPlay TAG: a competitive race and personal challenge. No matter which flavor of TAG you choose, here's how you play. We'll go through a typical round from start to finish.

First, the game will tell you the root phrase and how long you have to review it. To review the phrase, you can:

  • Use the left and right arrow keys to review by letter.
  • Use ctrl+left and ctrl+right to review by word.
  • Press space bar to hear the entire phrase repeated.
  • Press shift+space bar to hear the entire phrase spelled out.
Next, you'll hear a gong. At this point, you can start typing words. If you press a letter that is not in the root phrase, you'll hear a descriptive sound and all the letters you have typed to that point will be erased. This isn't as bad as it sounds, though. As you enter valid words, you'll be told how many points each word is worth. If you enter an invalid word, you'll hear an appropriate sound and you'll be told why the word was invalid. There are three possibilities: the word does not exist, the word is too short, or you or another player have already entered that word. (Note that some of these possibilities won't happen on the easier tables.) You might also get a bonus word. In genral, the longer the anagram, the greater the chance that it will be a bonus word for that round.

At some point during the round, you may hear a musical jingle start to play. This means you're in first place! If the jingle stops playing, that means someone else has taken the lead, and you'll be told who it was. If you don't want to hear this info, press Ctrl+M to mute the lead change announcement.

As the round comes to an end, you'll be given a ten-second warning of a ticking clock. At the end of the round, you'll hear a tone, followed by summary information about the round just played, which will vary depending on the type of game you're playing.

Personal Challenge

Looking to kill some time and have some fun, but don't want to play on the competitive tables? The personal challenge gives you an unlimited amount of time to make as many anagrams as you can from the given root phrase. Once you get tired of that phrase, press ctrl+n to be given a new one. We'll keep track of how you're doing, so you can quit for a while and start up again where you left off. Your personal challenge page will show you how many anagrams you've made from each phrase as well as your progress in making all the valid anagrams from each phrase. To get started, simply go to the Personal Challenge link from the TAG home page.

Competitive

In competitive mode, which is the primary mode of play, your goal is to come up with more anagrams in each round than anyone else at your table. There are three types of tables:
Easy:
Easy tables allow you to enter words that are part of the root phrase, such as danger in the above example. The minimum length of your anagram is two letters. You are allowed to enter words that another player has already entered.
Intermediate:
You are not allowed to enter a word that is part of the root phrase. The minimum length of each anagram is four letters. You are allowed to enter words that another player has already entered.
Advanced:
You are not allowed to enter a word that is part of the root phrase. The minimum length of each anagram is five letters. You are not allowed to enter words that another player has already entered.
Each table type has two speeds: social and fast. This controls the length of each round as well as the time you have to review each phrase.

While you're playing, you can press ctrl+f1 to see who is currently in the lead. Pressing ctrl+w will tell you how many words are left to find. Ctrl+R will tell you your score for your current session, that is, how long you've been playing that particular time. We've created additional hot keys to give you more information about the game and the other players at the table. Check out our Hot Key Guide.

Scoring

Your score depends on the length of the word you enter and the difficulty level of the table at which you're playing. The scoring system is as follows:
  • 2 letter words: Easy= 3 points, intermediate =6 points, advanced = 9 points
  • 3 letter words: Easy = 6 points, intermediate = 12 points, advanced = 18 points.
  • 4 letter words: easy = 10 points, intermediate = 20 points, advanced = 30 points
  • 5 letter words: easy = 15 points, intermediate = 30 points, advanced = 45 points
  • 6 letter words: easy = 21 points, intermediate = 42 points, advanced = 63 points.
  • 7 letter words: easy = 28 points, intermediate = 56 points, advanced = 84 points.
  • 8 letter words: easy = 36 points, intermediate = 72 points, advanced = 108 points.
  • 9 letter words: easy = 45 points, intermediate = 90 points, advanced = 135 points.
  • 10 letter words: easy = 55 points, intermediate = 110 points, advanced = 165 points.
and so on.

If you're playing on the advanced tables, you also earn points based on the score of the players you beat in each round. For example: Momo ends the round with 100 points Bobo ends the round with 200 points Clide ends the round with 300 points Momo unfortunately came in last, so he only gets 100 points. Bobo beat Momo, so he gets 100 bonus points, giving him a score of 300. Clide beat Momo and Bobo, so he gets 300 bonus points (100 because of Momo and 200 because of Bobo), giving him a final score of 600 points.
