Teaching JAWS to Behave

Sometimes new versions of JAWS don't know how to "play nice" with All inPlay <frown>. Luckily, we know how to teach JAWS to behave! Below are several different JAWS-related problems and how to fix them. These suggestions were kindly provided by members of our community.

Problem: JAWS 7 is completely confused!

Solution: Change the configuration that JAWS is currently using when you play. Here's a step-by-step explanation:

  1. Go to the play page and sit at the single player table.
  2. Press insert and f2 to bring up the configuration manager
  3. Arrow down once to configuration manager and press enter.
  4. Press alt+s to set options.
  5. Then down arrow to User options and press enter.
  6. Press the tab key two times and up arrow to off.
  7. Tab to OK and press enter and save the configuration under it's current name.

Problem: JAWS reads the window title all the time

Solution: You'll need to adjust JAWS's verbosity. Here's a step-by-step guide on how:

  1. In the Jaws window press insert/f2 and arrow down to the Utilities sub-menu.
  2. Right arrow once and arrow down to Configuration Manager.
  3. Press enter to go into the jcf file.
  4. Press alt/s for the Set Options menu.
  5. Press V for verbosity.
  6. Press enter and you will land on the preferences for beginner, intermediate and advanced - three radio buttons.
  7. If you tab from here you will find three buttons labeled beginner, intermediate and advanced. Press enter on the one corresponding to the radio button you have selected - i.e. If you selected beginner, tab once to the beginner Preferences button, twice to the intermediate preferences button if you have selected this with the radio buttons or three times for advanced.
  8. You will find 19 checkboxes, the seventh of which is "document Name". This will be announced as "checked". Press the spacebar to uncheck it.
  9. Press escape and tab to ok and press enter.
  10. Press alt/f4 to close the configuration manager. You will be asked if you want to save changes, please do so.

Problem: JAWS reads too much punctuation

Solution: Adjust JAWS' punctuation settings. Here's what the JAWS user-manual has to say:

"There are four possible punctuation levels. When you set a level for a punctuation symbol, JAWS speaks that symbol at the chosen level and all levels above. The levels are none, some, most or all. You can modify the level setting by pressing SPACEBAR when in the list control, or use the radio buttons.

For example, if you set commas to none, JAWS will read commas when the punctuation level is None, Some, Most, or All. If you set commas to Most, JAWS only reads commas if the punctuation level is Most or All. If you set commas to All, then JAWS only reads commas if the punctuation level is All.

Tip: If the punctuation level for JAWS verbosity is set to all, JAWS always reads every symbol in the list, regardless of punctuation level. If the punctuation level is set to All, but you do not want JAWS to read one or more symbols, reduce the punctuation level to Most. Then, in the Customize Punctuation dialog box, change the level for the symbols that you want JAWS to speak to None, Some, or Most. Set the level for the symbols you do not want JAWS to speak to All."

All inPlay recommends you customize punctuation so JAWS doesn't read you the colon.

Problem: Jaws isn't working right with All inPlay

Solution: Recompile your scripts.
