How to Play Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is a multiplayer game that two or more
people can play. The goal of the game is to be the first person to discard all
cards.
In All inPlay Crazy Eights, each player
is dealt in and the person clockwise of the dealer plays first. All remaining
cards are placed face down in the "draw pile." The top card on the
draw pile is flipped over into the "discard pile" and is the starting
card for play.
You must either match the suit or the value of the
top card. Therefore, if the top card on the discard pile is a two of clubs,
you can only play a two (of any suit) or a club (of any value).
One exception is the wild eight card. You can play
a wild eight at any time, no matter what suit or value card is in the discard
pile. When you play an eight, you can change the suit to anything you'd like
(hearts, diamonds, clubs, or spades). Yup, folks, it's a CRAZY Eight. Play it
well.
The other exceptions are Skips, Draw Twos, and Reverses.
- If you play a Skip, you force the next person
at the table to skip their turn.
- A Reverse reverses play back to the player before
your turn.
- If you play a Draw Two, the person who goes after
you is dealt two cards and must skip their turn unless you are playing on a "chaining" table. What is "chaining"? Chaining is a rule that allows draw 2 cards to be passed on rather than the player having to draw two cards.
If a Draw2 is played, this initiates a "draw chain." The first player who is confronted with the draw chain who cannot "pass it on" by playing a Draw2 or a Reverse or Skip of same suit as the top card has to draw the number of cards in the draw chain. A wild eight card can not be used to pass on a draw chain .
To add to the excitement of chaining, each deck has more special cards: Reverse, Draw 2, Skip, and Wild 8. Note that only tables marked as "chaining" use this rule.
If it's your turn, you may either play a card or
draw another card. If you have no playable cards, you must draw one card. If
you have a playable card, you may either choose to play it or to draw a card.
If the card you draw is playable, you have the choice to play it or not. If
you don't want to play the card you drew, you must pass. Once you've played
a card, or drawn a card and passed, play moves to the person to the right.
Play continues until someone discards all of their
cards.
The winner earns points from points left in the other
players hands. Eights count for 50 points, each Skip, Draw Two, and Reverse
card is 20 points, aces count for 1 point, and all other cards are worth their
face value.
When the draw pile is empty, the cards from the discard
pile are reshuffled back into the draw pile. However, there is a rare possibility
that everyone draws all the cards from the draw pile and no one can play. In
this case, the game ends in a "block," and the person with the least
number of points is declared the winner (if two players have the least number
of points, the winner is the player with the fewest cards left in their hand).
In the case of a tie, the total number of points from losing players are added
together and the number of points of the winner is subtracted. Both winners
win the total. So, if there are three players, Player 1 with 20 points, Player
2 with 3 points (with 1 card), and Player three with 3 points (and 1 card),
then Players 2 and 3 each win 17 points.
